Bulk Sample Analyses by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)

Each sample preparation is analysed using a polarized light microscope fitted with a dispersion stining objective. Positive identification of each layer’s constituents is performed by observing optical properties such as color, pleochroism, extinction angle, birefringence birefringence, sign of elongation, dispersion staining colors and other distinguishing optical characteristics. A report is generated identifying and quantifying each layer and its asbestos and non-asbestos components in estimated volume/area percents.

Air Sample Analysis by Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM)

PCM Analysis are prepared according to the NIOSH 7400 method. Fiber concentrations are quantified using a phase contrast light microscope. Analytical results are reported in tabular format. The data reported includes fiber concentration and other pertinent data.


All microscopists have atlendcd and passed examinations for the NIOSH 582 course “Sampling and Evaluating Airborne Asbestos Dusts” according to OSHA 29 CRFR.


The laboratory is actively participating and is successful in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Proficiency Analytical Testing Program (PAT). The laboratory identification is 79116-001.
